| 抄録 | （和） | (事前公開アブストラクト) This study investigated the development of metalinguisic awareness in three/four-year-old children and its correlation with early exposure to a non-native language. Metalinguistic awareness is the ability to focus on the linguistic forms separately from the meanings (Chaney 1992). A variety of positive impacts of having high metalinguistic awareness have been reported (e.g., Draher and Zenge 1990). Six to seven-year-old Bilingual children have shown higher metalinguisic awareness (e.g., Bialystok 1986a/b). Given this, we attempted to determine (1) whether this facilitation would be observed in children at earlier ages, and (2) whether the same effect would occur when the exposure to a non-native language was very limited. To address the issue, we conducted an experiment in Japanese to measure the level of metalinguisic awareness of three groups of Japanese children (ages 3 to 4 years) who had different levels of exposure to English: No-Exposure-Group, who had little or no contact with English; Moderate-Exposure-Group, who had a native speaker of English in a kindergarten; Frequent-Exposure-Group, who had a mandatory 15-minute English class a day, taught by a native English speaker. All children were recruited for the experiments within 8 months after they entered their kindergartens. The first task was a modified version of Piaget’s (1929) “sun-moon task”. This type of task examines the ability to apply unfamiliar labels to familiar objects; the ability is considered to reflect the awareness of arbitrary connections between forms and meanings (e.g. Evitar and Ibrahim 2000). We used two types of unfamiliar labels: (i) nonce words, and (ii) real words (e.g., Churippu (“tulip”) for a cat; Neko (“cat”) for tulips). The experimenter asked simple questions to children using the unfamiliar labels (e.g, “Neko” and “Churippu”, which one has a tail?). The children’s answers were counted as “correct” if they successfully used the unfamiliar label (i.e., “Churippu”). The results revealed that children with larger amount of exposure to English had developed a higher level of metalinguisic awareness. The results of our experiment revealed that children who were exposed to English had developed higher metalinguisic awareness. This suggests that exposure to a non-native language in early ages bolstered the development of metalinguisic awareness in children. An implication of this is that foreign language education from early ages has a desirable side-effect of fostering the development of metalinguisic awareness, which might in turn facilitate various aspects of linguistic development. |
