We developed a new three dimensional vocal tract mechanical model for anthropomorphic talking robot WT-7R (Waseda Talker No. 7 Refined), to improve the resonance characteristics of the vocal tract. The Waseda Talker talking robot series is aimed to reproduce human speech mechanism with three-dimensional accuracy. In the previous model WT-7(Waseda Talker No.7), the tongue mechanism is made of rigid links and cover made of thermoplastic rubber “Septon”. This mechanism could deform tongue shape and work as a part of the vocal tract, but the thickness of cover is not enough to prevent sound leakage which is resulted in insufficient resonance and the produced sound become unclear. In WT-7R, to resolve this problem, the inside of the tongue was filled with liquid. We adopted ethylene glycol as the liquid; it has less chemical damage to Septon and is enough to prevent the acoustic leakage. We used oil seal and liquid gasket to prevent liquid leakage. WT-7 also has problems in the movable range of t he tongue deformation and the lip opening. These problems are also improved in WT-7 by changing the mechanical design. With these improvements, the vowel quality of WT-7R becomes clearer than that of the previous robot, and the band width of the formant peak becomes narrow. |
