[Invited Talk] Present Status and Future Expectation of ITS

(in English) This paper discusses the present status and future expectation on ITS, where driver assistance systems have not yet widespread although they have been in the market, and automated driving systems or automated highway systems are still at the stage of R&D. Automated driving systems are an ultimate goal of ITS and discussion on the introduction must be started right now. One of the current issues on ITS is penetration of driver assistance systems, and current issues that ITS should provide solutions are prevention of vulnerable road users and elderly driver assistance. Mid and long term goals include automated heavy truck platoons and intelligent ultra-small vehicles suitable to the road network and transportation by automobiles in Japan, aiming at the global warming prevention as well as safety.
