Motion lines are considered one of the most effective way to represent objects' motion in still pictures. Motion lines are often used in comics, and increase their effectiveness by using with onomatopoeias. In this research, we measured the sense of speed of motion-lines and the corresponding onomatopoeias using magnitude estimation method, and considered the relation between them. The results showed that the linear parallel motion-lines corresponded with the onomatopoeias mimicking sounds of moving objects and conveyed the information of the sense of speed effectively. On the other hand, the sine wave motion lines corresponded with the onomatopoeias mimicking trace or state of moving objects and conveyed the information of the trace or state of them effectively. Our result also showed that the sense of speed increased with the number of parallel lines. This result may suggest the underlying mechanism of motion perception, if we consider that the motion-lines are not only the representation technique of objects' motion but also the representation of motion perception in visual system. |
