This paper presents a method for automated airway structure (anatomical names) recogniton and its application to a bronchoscopy guidance system. The proposed method consists of four steps: (a) extraction of bronchial tree structures from 3D CT datasets, (b) construction of classifiers, (c) computation of candidate names of a bronchial branch using the classifier, (d) computation of suitable combination of anatomical names of bronchial branches. We applied the proposed method to 90 cases of 3D CT datasets. The experimental results showed that the proposed method could assign correct anatomical names to bronchial branches of 86.9% up to sub-segmental lobe branches. Also, we overlaid anatomical names of bronchial branches which should be passed through onto real ronchoscopic view. We confirmed that it was quite useful to assist the bronchoscopy. |
