Synchronization of living beings has been observed in various systems including flashing of fireflies and calling of crickets, and the possible mechanisms have been studied both mathematically and numerically. In this presentation, we report synchronization and frustration in calling behavior of Japanese tree frogs. Japanese tree frogs are distributed ubiquitously and widely from Hokkaido to Yakushima in Japan. While isolated male frogs call nearly periodically, they can hear calls of other frogs. Therefore, calling behavior of many Japanese tree frogs can be understood as a system of coupled phase oscillators. The main experimental result is that two interacting Japanese tree frogs tend to call alternately almost in anti-phase. We model the synchronized calling behavior as a system of coupled phase oscillators to understand the nonlinear dynamics. Moreover, we report our studies on calling behavior of three Japanese tree frog. Since two frogs tend to call alternately, the system of three frogs can be frustrated. We theoretically analyse nonlinear dynamics in a system of three coupled oscillators, which models three interacting frogs; in particular, we perform bifurcation analysis and Lyapunov function analysis. |
