In wireless sensor networks, timing synchronization is an essential integrating component and several synchronization methods have been proposed. Among them, flooding time synchronization protocol (FTSP) is
now accepted as one of the highest-precision synchronization protocols. However, in FTSP the battery life is quite limited due to frequent transmissions of timing information. In this study, we consider to modify FTSP to realize longer network lifetime by decreasing the frequency of timing information transmissions. Based on our experiments with Mica2Dot, we observe a quantitative relationship between lower transmission frequency and synchronization precision degradation. Also, we consider the possibility of longer network lifetime from the above observations. The cause of lower synchronization precision is analyzed by systematic experiments and its problem is investigated in this report. |
