A Novel Method of Ship Detection by Applying CFAR to Coherence Images Produced by Multi-Look SAR Cross-Correlation Technique

(in English) MLCC (Multi-Look Cross-Correlation) is an useful technique to extract the images of ships embedded in sea clutter from SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data. In our previous study, we could extract an “invisible” small boat in the ALOS-PALSAR (Advanced Land Observing Satellite-Phased Array L-band SAR) amplitude image. However, when, after applying MLCC, some highly correlated noises from sea surface were present in the inter-look coherence image, SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) decreased, and the FAR (False Alarm Rate) increased. Consequently, detection of ships by the MLCC method alone became increasingly difficult. In order to improve the SNR nad to keep low FAR for ship detection , we propose a new method by applying CFAR to MLCC coherence images. In this paper, we summarize the algorithm and the experimental result, improvement of SNR 31.1dB and FAR decreasing $1.67 \times 10^{-3}$.
