The evolution of future wireless communication systems imposes a strong requirement on the efficiency of spectrum usage. Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) is a potential means to improve spectrum usage. To perform DSA, a cognitive radio system (CRS) needs to perform spectrum sensing first. Subsequently, the CRS analyzes spectrum usage to find unused spectrum (white space). Then, the system makes decision on which white space to use for data communication. In these practices, sensing serves as a fundamental and key step for DAS. This paper presents the technical issues and IEEE standardization activities for spectrum sensing. In particularly the IEEE 1900.6 working group (WG) activities on standardizing the interfaces and data structures required for exchange of sensing related information are discussed. By explaining the objective, use cases, reference model and data structure, the paper describes in detail the technical aspects of the IEEE 1900.6 sensing interface and its usefulness. |
