| 抄録 | （和） | (事前公開アブストラクト) Over the last decade or so, memory-based models such as Gibson’s Dependency Locality Theory (Gibson, 1998, 2000) have played a dominant role in explaining asymmetries in the processing of subject and object relative clauses. However, an increasing body of evidence points to a role for probabilistic expectations in accounting for the data. Factors such as the animacy of the modified noun phrase (e.g., Gennari & MacDonald, 2008; Mak, Vonk, & Schriefers, 2002; Traxler, Williams, Blozis, & Morris, 2005), whether the embedded noun phrase is pronominal (Reali & Christiansen, 2007), and the discourse context in which the relative clause appears (Mak, Vonk, & Schriefers, 2008; Roland, O’Meara, Yun, & Mauner, 2008; Sato, Kahraman, & Sakai, 2008) have been shown to affect processing difficulty. While probabilistic accounts which rely purely on structural biases are clearly inadequate, we argue that the observed difficulties in processing can be accounted for by a sufficiently complete model of expectations. |
