(in English) Before the concept of electromagnetic compatibility (ESD) was established in the Unite States of America more than fifty years ago, electrostatic discharges (ESDs) have already been known as an electromagnetic noise source, and nowadays still become one of significant EMC subjects to be solved. Since the technical committee on EMC of IEICE (The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers) has been started from 1977, 32 years have passed, which stands for the history of EMC activities in Japan. In 1977 the number of technical reports presented at EMC technical meetings (EMCJ) the above-mentioned committee holds almost every year was not less than 60, while it is now more than 100 per year and is gradually increasing every year. For the reports on ESD except lightning and contact, however, the number is only 129 (3.7%) during 1977 to 2009 (3 to 4 reports on average every year), whereas there surely exists these reports every year even after thirty two long years have gone by. This implies the necessity of a breakthrough in dealing with ESD problems. In this report, studies on ESD are reviewed from IEICE technical reports presented at the EMCJ during from 1977 to 2009. Some of the findings on ESD this author obtained so far are also shown along with future ESD subjects.
