Clinical Application of Electropalatograph : Past, Present and Future
Ichiro Yamamoto (yamamoto Dental Clinic), Yuri Fujiwara (Seirei Christopher Univ.) SP2009-49 WIT2009-55
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Through more than thirty years of dental practice, I have experienced many clients with cleft palate who have residual articulation disorders. We introduced visual feedback training using electropalatograph (EPG) for those clients since almost 5 years ago. EPG therapy proved to be very effective for them, because it is easy to understand their tongue movement not only for clients and therapists but also for their family. Ever since the 1930ユs, EPG has been developed and many EPG studies were done in 1970ユs and 1980ユs in Japan. However, clinical use of EPG did not spread because of the difficulty of artificial plate preparation and computer handling. Today, WinEPG (Articulate Instruments Ltd, UK)descended from Reading University is the popular EPG system and many improvements have been done. For the widespread use of EPG, further efforts are required, such as cost down of artificial plates and organization of EPG network. Moreover, using EPG together with readily available PC or mobile phone, we can go forward with telepractice in this field.
