The Kyoto University Academic Vocabulary Database -- The First Step in the Development of EAP Teaching Materials --
Toshiyuki Kanamaru, Akira Tajino (Kyoto Univ.) TL2009-36
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Vocabulary education is a central concern in English education programmes at multi-disciplinary research universities in Japan. At Kyoto University vocabulary education planning was initiated from an EAP-curriculum perspective by compiling an academic vocabulary database. This paper describes the database and discusses ways in which it can be used for EAP materials development. The publication entitled “The Kyoto University Data-based List of 1,110 Essential Academic Words” (Kenkyusha, 2009), a product of academic-private sector collaboration, is also introduced.
