A modeling study of latent structure of articulation generating speech sound within the identical category

(in English) It is well known that there exists one-to-many relationship between speech sound and articulation for years. However, this one-to-many relationship has not been investigated sufficiently yet, due to the difficulty in observing all possible articulations from natural human speech. In this paper, articulations, whose acoustic properties belong to 5 Japanese vowels, are generated using a physiological articulatory model for clarifying the one-to-many relationship. We separate the generated articulations into natural articulations and unnatural ones, and reduce the data dimension after projecting the articulations into a non-linear space. In this analysis, latent structure of the articulations is visualized. Based on the visualized structure, the relation between the natural articulations and the unnatural ones is quantified.
