Predictive coding model is a hierarchical model
that explains the computational role of reciprocal connections between cortical areas.
A two-layer network implementing this model can acquire the properties similar to those of V1 neurons
after exposure to natural images.
If the model provides a general framework of the hierarchical processing in the visual cortex,
it is expected that higher layers of a multi-layer predictive coding model
have the properties similar to IT neurons.
In the present study, we constructed a four-layer hierarchical network based on the predictive coding model,
and trained this network on various natural images and Latin alphabet.
After training, the network obtained the properties similar to those of IT neurons.
This result suggests that multi-layer predictive coding model describes
the hierarchical processing in the ventral pathway. |
