A proposal of L2 loop detection method with path-marking technique

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper proposes the Layer (L2) loop detection method with a path-marking technique. An arise of infinite loop in L2 network causes not only excess consumptions of network resources, such as transmission bandwidth and frame switching capability, but also a long service break with huge negative impacts on service assurance in the worst cases. So, operators of Carrier Ethernet have put importance on the establishment of infinite loop countermeasure. In one of conventional methods, infinite loop can be detected when one of the ports of a switch in L2 network receives the loop detection frame that was previously sent from the same switch. However, the conventional methods are only able to notify the occurrence of an infinite loop in a L2 network, and are not able to provide any location information about the subset of the network or the group of the switches, where the network falls into an infinite loop. This information is necessary to find out the causes of the loop and is crucial for the rapid recovery from the incident. To solve this problem, this paper proposes the use of a new path-marking technique for the loop detection that can automatically identify the group of switches where the causes of the loop exist. In addition, this paper reports the algorithm of the proposed method, an implementation design example of it, and the proposed method’s superiority over the conventional methods. Also, it is reported that although the implementation of the proposed method needs to add a new function on all switches in L2 trunk network, the function can be implemented by relatively low cost, such as single times of operations on an internal table.
