Early lexical development in Japanese-speaking twins and singletons -- Comparison by vocabulary checklist method --

(in English) To determine the existence of language delay in Japanese-learning twins, the present study compared vocabulary sizes of twins with those of singletons at 12, 18, and 24 months of age by using a vocabulary checklist method. Results showed that the vocabulary sizes of twin-boys at 18 and 24 months were significantly smaller than those of singleton-boys despite no difference between those of twin-girls and of singleton-girls. Further analysis showed that twin- and singleton-girls without older siblings had larger vocabulary sizes than those with older siblings whereas twin- and singleton-boys revealed the opposite tendency in vocabulary size.
