This report discusses the research progress of the 76 GHz millimeter-wave radar system for autonomous unmanned helicopters. The purpose of the radar is to detect and avoid obstacles that may affect flight safety. To achieve these objectives, the radar system is required to have high range resolution and a long detection range, while maintaining small volume and weight. Firstly, the performance of the radar front-end module is evaluated. The module employs standing wave radar, which enables the circuit to be simplified. Then, a parabola antenna made of very light-weight carbon fiber reinforced plastics is presented. Measured results show that the gain of the antenna can be easily improved by more than 40 dBi. Finally, a local oscillator module, which achieves 6 GHz bandwidth of the RF transmitting signal, is discussed. The large bandwidth is expected to have very high range resolution. |
