Preference between syntactic vs. prosodic cues in comprehension of aurally presented English sentences among Japanese EFL learner

(in English) The purpose of this study is to determine what information Japanese EFL learners rely on in processing English sentences and if it varies with their English proficiency. Experiments were performed to determine whether Japanese EFL learners utilize prosodic or morpho-syntactic cues in analyzing English sentences, when the two suggest conflicting syntactic structures. The results of the experiments suggest that prosodic cues seem to be the more important information for Japanese EFL learners at a lower proficiency level, but as the learners’ proficiency go up, they tend to rely more on morpho-syntactic cues in processing sentences. Although our experiments were not exhaustive enough to determine the real cause of this, we conjecture that as learners’ English proficiency improve, they will be able to obtain semantic and morpho-syntactic information from the aural input, while learners with lower proficiency have to rely mostly on prosodic cues because that is the only kinds of information they can obtain from the aural input for processing sentence structures. This study shows that the strategy of Japanese EFL learners change from dependence on prosodic cues to morpho-syntactic cues in analyzing aurally presented English sentences.
