This paper elucidates the recent developments in the application of microwave remote sensing techniques particularly space borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems to cryosphere (snow, ice and glacier) of Himalayan region. SAR is an active system imaging the earth’s surface in day and night, in all weather, through cloud or haze and their spatial resolution is compatible with the topographic variations in the Himalayan region. Currently space borne SAR data have been widely used to map glacier covered area in alpine and Himalayan regions and also to develop algorithms to infer geophysical parameters. Backscatter image of SAR is extremely useful for the quantitative estimation of snow pack characteristics like snow wetness, snow grain size, snow density and snow water equivalence which are essential for hydrologic applications. In addition, SAR data can be useful to map snow cover and to identify different types of snow. Multi-temporal SAR data have great potential in mapping glacier facies which has distinct advantage in the glacier mass balance estimation. |
