According to semiotics, words have no meanings, which will be clarified by this article. It investigates folk tales on words and the "Conditional Reflex" experiments of Pavlov. Then, it reveals that the mechanism of meanings is a survival instinct shared by all animals, and human uniqueness lies in its discrete pronunciation. Phonemic code sequences are distinctly pronounced but continuously perceived by mammal auditory cortex, which yields "Entropic Gain" and a speech-to-listening automaton. Thanks to this automaton, humans acquired grammars and became able to constract "Functions of Words", i.e. abstract concepts. |
