Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo has launched a project supported by the Japan Society for the Science Promotion as the Grants in Aid for Scientific Research. In this project, we are aiming at developing new-generation seafloor geodetic observation system that conquers difficulties inherent with the current system. Central idea of this observation system is to utilize techniques of underwater robot (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) and submarine cable to make measurements in place of using the research vessels. We have established a submarine cable transponder as an acoustic benchmark and performed positioning measurements with the new surface system on an AUV. Observation system which fulfilled the most of the requirements of the initial design was come to realization, even though there still remains room for improvement on it.
