The routing function of the Internet is being troubled as the number of entries in the BGP routing table is increasing fast. Multihoming and provider-independent (PI) addressing in sites or edge networks have contributed to this growth. In this report, we discuss how the locator ID separation, also called ID/locator split-based, architecture being proposed for the new generation network can keep the routing table size small, while supporting multihoming and PI addressing in the edges. The proposed architecture allows the edge and provider networks to use different locator spaces, called local and global locators, respectively. The BGP global routing tables store only the global locators, which are highly aggregateable. Multihoming and PI addressing features as well as edge network reconfigurations (e.g., in the event of provider change, network split or merge) are hidden from the global routing system by translating local to global locators (and vice versa) in the border routers using ID-to-locator mapping records stored in the mapping registries. This report presents the ID/locator split-based routing mechanism and a design of the ID-to-locator mapping registry system. |
