A Method of Application Identification from Encrypted Traffic based on Characteristic Changes by Encryption

(in English) Recent years, there are many studies on identification of application from the monitored traffic in the Internet where various types of application traffic coexist. Application Identification is one of effective technologies for network management because application-based traffic control would be realizable based on results of identification. However, accurate identification is becoming difficult by using methods proposed so far due to the increase of encrypted traffic. In application identification, encryption is one of serious factors to degrade the accuracy of identification because it is so hard to infer the original (unencrypted) traffic from the encrypted one. Our research goal is to improve the accuracy of application identification whatever the target traffic is encrypted. In this paper, we propose a method of application identification from encrypted traffic based on characteristic changes by encryption. By applying this method, we show that the identification accuracy of application for the encrypted traffic can be improved.
