One of feature of the lateral control of vision-based vehicles is a preview characteristic for a lane along which a vehicle drives, and the look-ahead-distance of the vision system affects the lateral control performance. In this paper, a lateral control algorithm when a vehicle drives along a straight line is designed with the LQ regulator problem, and the relationship between the look-ahead-distance and the lateral control performance is considered. The appropriate coefficients of the
performance index depend on the vehicle speed. The optimal look-ahead-distance becomes longer as the vehicle speed becomes higher. The look-ahead-distance, then, is evaluated when a vehicle drives along a circle, and it is shown that the distance calculated when driving along a line is also applicable to a vehicle driving along a circle. |
