The suppression of carbachol-induced beta oscillation in hippocampal slices obtained from the rat in light phase

(in English) Brain has circadian rhythm and the rhythm affects the neuronal activities. Cholinergic agent carbachol induces $\beta$ oscillation intermittently in rat hippocampal slices. In the present study, whether the carbachol-induced $\beta$ oscillation is generated differently in the light- and dark-phase or not was studied. Carbachol induced  oscillations which are derived from the rat brains in the light and dark phases. The frequencies, duration and amplitude of the $\beta$ oscillations in the light and dark phase slices are not significantly different. On the other hand, the inter-burst intervals (IBI) in the dark- and light-phase slices were 17.8 ± 1.2 s and 24.1 ± 1.4 s, respectively. The difference was significant. The muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine suppressed the carbachol-induced $\beta$ oscillation, while the nicotinic receptor antagonist d-tubocrarine significantly decreased the frequency of the oscillation. d-tubocrarine did not affect the other parameters of the oscillation. The GABAA receptor antagonist gabazine significantly shortened IBI of the oscillation in the light-phase slices, while it did not change it in the dark-phase slices. In addition, gabazine did not affect the other parameter, duration, frequency and amplitude. Because carbachol-induced  oscillation generates in CA3 neuronal network, these results suggest that the interneurons in CA3 will activate in the light phase, and modulate the neuronal rhythm induced in hippocampus.
