Photonic crystal fiber (PCF) attenuators with air hole diameter control were fabricated by PCF fusion using CO_2 laser irradiation technique. The diameters of air holes in the PCF cross section could be equally controlled by the laser irradiation with PCF rotation. We demonstrated that the air hole diameter ratio to pitch could be adjusted with irradiated laser power. It was clarified that the larger attenuation could be obtained for the smaller air hole ratio to pitch. It was also clarified that the fabricated PCF attenuators exhibited good wavelength independent characteristics in the wavelength range from 980nm to 1550nm. |
