Design and evaluation of Vivaldi antenna for ground penetrating radar with focusing on surface current along antenna conductor

(in English) Design and evaluation of an antipodal Vivaldi antenna to be mounted on Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system are reported. So far, there is no quantitative index for a designing of an antenna conductor of the Vivaldi antenna, so it is difficult to suppress undesirable reflection of a surface current along an edge of the antenna conductor. In this paper, we utilize Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method to visualize the surface current along the antenna conductor, and determine the shape of the antenna conductor to minimize the undesirable reflection of the surface current. As a result, both of the return coefficient (|S11|) and a time sidelobe level could be suppressed compared to the conventional antennas. As for the new antipodal Vivaldi antenna, the antenna size is 250mm by 200mm, the return coefficient (|S11|) is below -8dB in a frequency range of 0.5 – 6GHz and the time sidelobe level is 27dB lower than a main pulse.
