(in English) Ultrasonic sonar emissions and 3-D flight paths of free-ranging wild Pipistrellus abramus were measured by using a custom made microphone-array system during foraging insect preys. Interpulse interval (IPI) was relatively constant at around 100 ms in search phase (normal IPI). Interestingly, the bats occasionally prolonged IPI approximately twice as long as the normal search IPI (long IPI), which occurred with increased frequency in case of low insect density. These findings suggest that the foraging bats expand the search range by prolonging IPI for the effective search when the insect density is low. We then build a mathematical model of this behavior in terms of pulse production during target search.
