The development of lithium secondary battery for backup power application is being focused mainly on the safety and capacity issue. In terms of safety, intense research is under way on developing negative electrode made of oxide materials, which have a positive potential towards Li metal. A spinel-type lithium titanium oxides (LTO) has recently been commercialized because of its structural stability upon Li ion insertion/extraction, which provides a long cycle life. However, its capacity value of 175 mAh/g is much lower than that of the conventionally used graphite of 372 mAh/g. This study introduces the high capacity of lithium titanium oxides with ramsdellite structure, and describes its synthesis and its electrochemical characteristics as a negative electrode material for lithium secondary batteries. By applying a post annealing treatment, we improved the discharge capacity to 260 mAh/g. |
