Since its proposal 60 years ago, the Turing Test has generated intense debate in theoretical AI. However, it has not had as much impact on actual applications. Recently, researchers have used pragmatics to analyze man-machine exchanges (e.g., transcripts from the Loebner prize, a Turing-style competition) and machine-machine exchanges. We argue based on those results that there is a need to implement some measure of theory of mind (i.e., the machine should have some representation of the user’s representation of the world) to improve machines’ responses. We report questionnaire data on the hypothetical interactions between users and three QA systems. The QA systems did not differ in how human-like their responses were judged to be; nevertheless, their responses were considered more helpful when they attempted to guess the users’ goals rather than just providing literal answers to the queries. The results are unsurprising, but they underscore the need to go beyond literal answers, which have often been the sole goal of this type of system development. Research should aim at systems that can maintain representations of the user’s mental model of the world so that their needs can be better serviced. |
