Recognition of handwritten sentences using CombNET-III with word class information

(in English) The CombNET-III large scale pattern recognition method has been successfully applied to handwritten Kanji and Hiragana recognition problems with up to 3036 categories. Due to the large complexity of the problem, the use of lexical information for reducing possible candidate characters in isolated words was recently proposed. In this work, we target handwritten sentences, assuming that the Hiragana characters on the sentence had already been recognized. The word list of possible candidate characters is then pruned by the use of the lexical category information, obtained from the Hiragana characters on the sentence. Experimental results show significant reduction in complexity.
