Bi-directional propagation characteristics due to rain attenuation between Tokyo and Osaka in Ka-band satellite communication links are investigated using the rain attenuation observations of CS-2 and CS-3 beacon signals (19.45GHz, RHCP) conducted at Osaka Electro-Communication University, Neyagawa, Osaka, and CSK Tokyo Setagaya earth station, in 1987, 1990-1990. The up-link (28.98GHz) attenuation at each earth station is estimated by frequency scaling methods taking raindrop size distributions (DSD) into consideration. The long-term cumulative time percentages for up- and down-link bi-directional rain attenuation of 10-20 dB are both shown to be about 5 times larger than those for down-link rain attenuation of the same range between Tokyo and Osaka, with the attenuation values being about 2.5 times larger at time percentages around 0.1%. For their monthly statistics, the time percentages of attenuation occurrence are rather enhanced at August and September, when the signals are transmitted from Tokyo to Osaka. For their hourly statistics, the time percentages are slightly increased in afternoon and evening hours, when the signals are transmitted from Osaka to Tokyo. These statistics are found to be affected to more extent by up-link rain attenuation characteristics at Tokyo and Osaka, respectively. |
