[Invited Talk] Digital Typhoon: Integration and Analysis of Large-scale Data for the Real-time Recognition and Understanding of Meteorological Phenomena

(in English) This year, 2011, is the year of disaster in Japan. What is the possible contribution from informatics to those disasters? The author believes that the contribution will be on the design and construction of emergency information systems for collecting information from the real world, organizing and analyzing it, and disseminating necessary information to people. In this process, research in the PRMU domain can make an important contribution for the process of capturing information in the real world, analyzing it, and visualizing it. This presentation introduces an example of such contribution, namely “Digital Typhoon” Project (http://www.digital-typhoon.org/), which makes large-scale image collection of typhoons and tries to integrate various types of data in the real and cyber worlds. We also discuss various types of data and algorithms used in this project.
