A proposed tapped-inductor buck converter with an auxiliary switch is discussed for home DC power supply system. The novel tapped-inductor converter is similar operation to a typical buck converter, although conventional tapped-inductor converters are similar operation to a typical buck-boost converter. As a result, (1) high step-down conversion is achieved (Vo/Vi=D/n), (2) the core size of the tapped-inductor is reduced (DC bias current = Load current), (3) open loop transfer function becomes a second-order delay, (4) all switching elements are easily droved by usually drive ICs without including the pulse transformer, (5) output overvoltage protection is achieved by an auxiliary capacitor. Moreover the switching loss can be reduced by a current resonant with the auxiliary capacitor and the leakage inductance. The operating and performance of the proposed converter were verified experimentally by a laboratory coin sized prototype (25mm x 25mm x 8mm ) of 48V input to 1.0V/25A output at 500kHz. As a result, 88% efficiency at half load and 85% efficiency at full load are realized. |
