Suppression of Quantization Noise for EPWM Transmitter with Saturated Power Amplifier

(in English) OFDM is widely used for mobile communications because it has high spectral efficiency and robustness for multipath fading. However, it has high PAPR and weakness for intermodulation distortion. Thus, it is difficult for current power amplifiers to amplify the OFDM signal with high power efficiency and good linearity. To address these issues, envelope pulse-width modulation (EPWM) transmitter has been proposed. It employs $\Delta-\Sigma$ modulator to convert envelope of the high PAPR signal into pulse-width modulation (PWM) waveform. The power efficiency of the power amplifier is improved by operating in saturation mode in the EPWM transmitter. However, quantization noise from $\Delta-\Sigma$ modulator degrades signal quality and causes jamming to adjacent channels. To suppress the quantization noise from EPWM transmitter, amplitude noise compensating (ANC) EPWM transmitter is proposed. In this paper, the performance of the ANC-EPWM transmitter with saturated power amplifier is analyzed and it is shown to reduce a required output backoff by applying the predistortion method.
