In a redundant network server system, data in the memory of a primary server are copied to that of a backup server to rapidly switch over a service when a hardware failure occurs. Configuring N:1 redundancy in such a server system requires the memory of a backup server to be scaled up by N times to store the data of N primary servers, and scaled down after it takes over a service of a failed primary server. Thus, we propose a method for this dynamic scaling up of the memory of a backup server by means of I/O virtualization technology and a solid-state drive (SSD) used as a memory extension. We implemented a 3:1 server system of session initiation protocol (SIP). Observed performance and the CPU load were the same as those of a conventional 1:1 configuration, though the total power consumption was reduced by 30%. |
