Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The present paper reports an investigation into the characteristics of native Korean listeners’ identification of geminate and singleton consonants in Japanese. The aim was to understand L2 learners’ identification of error patterns and to analyze the cause of identification errors, The investigation especially focused on the relationship between geminate insertion and Korean intervocalic tense consonants. As a first step in this study the first experiment assessed the perceptual criteria that non-native listeners use to identify length contrasts, and these included variations in speaking rate. Results of this experiment indicated that non-native listeners identify length contrast by relying on a fixed-length criterion instead of adapting to speaking rate variation. Specifically, Korean listeners showed a bias toward geminate responses for all speaking rates, although the bias tended to be stronger for a slower speaking rate. This tendency was called the geminate insertion phenomenon. This result suggests that the geminate insertion phenomena are related to the Korean phonological system. Both acoustic and psycho-acoustical factors were used to analyze the characteristics of Korean intervocalic tense consonants. The present study focused on an enpenthetic 's' in Korean phonology. The results indicated that the Korean intervocalic tense consonants have assimilated with the Japanese geminate consonants. However, this assimilation may possibly be affected by the perception of volume. These results suggest that 'loudness' is likely to be a crucial factor in understanding the Korean native listeners' mis-identification of Japanese geminate consonants.
