The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is a powerful numerical technique for analyzing a model including complex inhomogeneous objects in time domain. However, when the model includes a high-Q resonant cavity, such as a shielding box or a metal chamber, the FDTD method becomes inefficient because of its poor convergence. In this paper, a hybrid method combining the method of moments (MoM) and the FDTD method is proposed for analyzing composite structures including inhomogeneous objects. The hybrid MoM-FDTD method is first derived from Poggio-Miller- Chang-Harrington-Wu-Tsai (PMCHWT) formulation for composite structures. Hybridization of the MoM and FDTD methods is performed via the equivalence principle. The validity has been demonstrated by calculating the electric field distributions in dielectric sphere placed inside an open cavity. The electric fields are calculated by the MoM-FDTD method and compared with those obtained from the FDTD method. Then the MoM-FDTD method is used to analyze a model of a rat placed inside a reverberation chamber. Finally, the results of the whole-body average specific absorption rate (WBA-SAR) of rat at arbitrary locations inside the reverberation chamber demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed hybrid MoM-FDTD method. |
