Characteristics of Japanese and English reading in presbyopia

(in English) It is well known that presbyopic people reads increasingly slower as letters decrease in size and contrast, although little research has been done about whether their reading is affected by whether letters are written in their native language or not. In this study, we hypothesized that the effects of letter size and contrast on reading of presbyopic people becomes more evident when the letters are written in their non-native language. To verify this hypothesis, we conducted an experiment with young native Japanese participants, presenting English and Japanese words which were blurred by Gaussian filter in such a way that they looked like the blurred images obtained in presbyopia. The results showed that when participants were presented blurred English words, they read increasingly slower as letters decreased in contrast, supporting our hypothesis.
