The processing of surface and deep anaphora in Japanese -- An ERP study --

(in English) Human beings are thought to depend on linguistic antecedents or nonlinguistic context to interpret phonetically-null or alternative elements in anaphoric sentences. Hankamer and Sag (1976) claim that there is a distinction between surface anaphora and deep anaphora. This study uses event-related potentials to examine whether or not anaphora are psychologically real and whether or not the distinction between surface and deep anaphora can be made in event-related potentials observed, as the theory predicts. The results seem to suggest that surface and deep anaphora are processed in two distinct ways.
