Complex Permittivity Measurement of D2O by Waveguide Penetration Method in Millimeter-Wave Band Yoshii Sugeno, Alfred Kik, Yukihisa Suzuki (TMU) EMCJ2012-55 |

In millimeter-wave band, there are a few studies for the measurement of complex permittivity on D2O. In this study, the measurement of complex permittivity of D2O is performed using the wave-guide penetration method from 33 GHz to 65 GHz. Values of both real and imaginary part of the complex permittivity for D2O are smaller than those for H2O in this measurement. Dielectric relaxation times of D2O and H2O are estimated from measurement data with the regression analysis. Debye’s relaxation theory and Kaatze’s empirical formula which is modified Debye’s theory is used for the estimation of ε(0), ε(∞) and relaxation time τ in the regression analysis. Relaxation times for D2O and H2O are 8.81×10^-12 s and 7.69×10^-12 s, respectively. It is found that the relaxation time for D2O is longer than that for H2O. The relaxation time for orientation polarization increases according to the increment of the mass for the target molecule. Therefore, estimated relaxation time for D2O is appropriate, because the weight of D2O is larger than that of H2O by the mass of two neutrons. |
