Evaluation of Kouseiyomi by Blind Persons

(in English) “Kouseiyomi” is a set of expressions that consist of the names of the
parts of kanji characters and the positional relationships of the parts.
Recalling the shapes of kanji characters by these expressions requires
two subtasks; (1) to recall the shapes of the parts and (2) to recall
the positional relationships of the parts. Thus, we performed an
experiment in which seven acquired totally blind persons were asked to
choose the part that was explained by kouseiyomi out of four
alternatives by touch and to place two or three parts in the positions
designated by kouseiyomi. As the result, about 70% of kanji characters
tested were correctly reconstructed by six or more participants. At the
same time, kanji characters which consists of three parts aligned both
vertically and horizontally were incorrectly placed by four
participants. Finding better expression methods for these kinds of kanji
characters remains as a future task.
