Development of wide band millimeter wave radars connected by optical fiber

(in English) Since the accident of French supersonic aircraft in 2000, the threat of Foreign Objects and Debris (FOD) is focused to prevent aircraft from such tragedy. In order to keep runways clean and safe, authors are developing FOD radar to detect tiny metallic objects on the airport surface. Millimeter wave radar is a candidate for it. However, we have to consider the extension of surveillance range because of the free space attenuation and low power devices. In this paper, we propose a new concept of millimeter wave radar system connected by optical fiber from the control system and radar module. A local signal generator and a millimeter radar module are connected by commercial radio over fiber system. They perform wide band frequency tuning capability in millimeter wave band. We also demonstrate fundamental trial for 76GHz radar connected by optical fiber with 960 MHz frequency modulation. It performs enough sensitivity to detect the reflector without any amplifier in an anechoic chamber.
