A Study on soft decoding scheme for SC-FDMA systems

(in English) Long Term Evolution (LTE) adopts Single Carrier-Frequency Division Multiple Access (SC-FDMA) for the up-link channel. Several studies have been made on the SC-FDMA in order to achieve high frequency efficiency and low Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). In the SC-FDMA system, an orthogonality between symbols multiplexed by Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) at the transmitter is destroyed because of the frequency selective fading channel. Thus, we cannot restore the orthogonality by using the Inverse DFT at the receiver. Although the optimum receiver is Maximum Likelihood (ML) receiver which provides a symbol set that maximizes the likelihood, the ML receiver outputs only hard value and we have to use the decoder with the hard value input. In general, it is well-known that the decoder with the soft input outperforms that with the hard input. In this paper, we propose a new demodulation and decoding method which provides log-likelihood ratio of the codeword using the received signal when the orthogonality between the symbols multiplexed by the DFT is destroyed by the frequency selective fading channel. Moreover, we calculate a log-likelihood ratio of the message at the decoder and gives feedback on the calculation of the log-likelihood of the codeword. We iteratively use the ratio as a priori information of the codeword. By computer simulations, we evaluate the proposed method in comparison with the conventional demodulator and decoder with the hard value.
