This study investigates the effect of preemption on the transitivity alternations in second language acquisition of English. Thirty-nine Japanese-speaking learners of English participated in the task in which they learned novel verbs provided either as intransitive or transitive. The experimental group learned the novel verbs with preemption cues, whereas the control group learned the same novel verbs without them. The results of the production task showed that the overgeneralization errors on transitivity occurred more frequently in the control group than in the experimental group, suggesting that preemption helps adult second language learners learn transitivity alternations in English. |
