There has been a lot of researches on the usage of prepositions, but little done to compare how learners of English use prepositions. From the educational point of view, it is important to analyze the usage of prepositions, not only by native speakers, but also by learners of English. In the current study, using a new international learner corpus which strictly controls the writing conditions, we conducted a contrastive analysis of prepositions used by Japanese learners, native speakers, and learners in eight Asian countries. Although we looked at preposition use by varied learners in Asian countries, our main goal was to illuminate the way in which Japanese learners use prepositions. As a result, we found that there is no clear difference between Japanese learners and native speakers regarding the frequency of preposition use; however Japanese learners have a specific tendency to overuse some prepositions and underuse others. |
