Processing of Collocation in Japanese Native and Second Language Speakers
Li Wenping (Nagoya Univ.) TL2012-45
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A phrase-acceptability judgment task, consisting of 104 verb-noun collocations and 104 control phrases, was carried out to 21 native speakers and 32 Chinese advanced L2 learners of Japanese, in order to investigate the influence of frequency, mutual information (MI), and conditional probability (CP) on accuracy and fluency of processing of these collocations. As a result, for both of the native speakers and Chinese learners, it is predominantly the frequency of the collocations which determines processability. The implication of this finding is discussed for high-frequency collocations may be processed holistically in the mind and prioritized for teaching.
