Learning multiple infant-directed speech words by Japanese 1-year-olds

(in English) Since there are many infant-directed speech (IDS) words in Japanese, young children often hear from their caretakers multiple labels that consisted of an IDS word and an adult-directed speech (ADS) word such as wanwan and inu (i.e., dog). Previous studies on multiple label learning have shown that Japanese-learning 16-month-old children rapidly learn only IDS words whereas 19-month-olds learn both IDS and ADS words (Kobayashi & Murase, 2011). To better understand developmental pathways on multiple label learning, the present study investigated whether Japanese-learning 16- and 19-month-olds can learn two IDS words toward a single object in a habituation switch task. The results showed that they did not learn two words, indicating that it is hard for children at this age to rapidly learn multiple labels in IDS words.
