Internet-Traffic Identification using Regenerative On-Off Arrival Processes

(in English) It is significantly important to capture the long-term correlation structure in modeling the Internet traffic. In this paper, we propose an Internet-traffic identification scheme with a discrete-time regenerative on-off arrival process, which can exhibit a long range dependency. We assume for the regenerative on-off arrival process that the off period is independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) with a geometric distribution, and that the on period is i.i.d.~with a general distribution. Under this setting, we propose a fitting method of the increment of packets arriving during an on period by a zeta distribution. We also adopt, as a measure of the accuracy of identification, the packet-loss probability of a single-server finite-buffer queue with deterministic services. To investigate the utility of our method, we perform numerical experiments using real traffic data and those of the M/G/$\infty$ input generated by Monte-Carlo simulation. Numerical examples show that the proposed identification scheme works well for the M/G/$\infty$ input. It is also shown that for real traffic data, the proposed scheme can provide good estimates of the packet-loss probability when the buffer size is small.
